‎By Ndife David, Awka.

‎

‎The Anambra State Government has intensified efforts to combat hypertension as part of activities marking the 2026 World Hypertension Day, urging residents to embrace regular blood pressure checks and healthier lifestyles to prevent sudden deaths linked to the condition.

‎

‎Speaking during a press briefing in Awka after a road show organised by the State Ministry of Health in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, described hypertension as a “silent killer” that often shows no visible symptoms until complications arise.

‎Highlighting the theme of this year’s commemoration, “Controlling Hypertension Together; Check Your Blood Pressure Regularly, Defeat The Silent Killer,” Dr. Obidike stressed that early detection, awareness campaigns, and proper management remain critical in reducing the growing burden of cardiovascular diseases in the state.

‎

‎He noted that hypertension is one of the leading causes of stroke, kidney disease, and other life-threatening health conditions globally.

‎

‎As part of measures to strengthen preventive healthcare, the Commissioner announced the introduction of free hypertension screening services across primary healthcare centres and general hospitals in the state, including the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka, and the General Hospital Enugwu-Ukwu.

‎

‎According to him, the initiative is open to all residents regardless of tribe, religion, or ethnic background.

‎

‎Dr. Obidike further disclosed that the Soludo administration has launched the “Solution Know Your Number” campaign aimed at increasing awareness, encouraging routine blood pressure checks, and improving access to medications for effective hypertension management.

‎

‎He urged residents to reduce salt intake, eat healthy meals, exercise regularly, avoid excessive alcohol consumption and smoking, manage stress, and seek prompt medical attention when necessary.

‎

‎Reaffirming Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery, the Commissioner commended the support of the WHO, Population Services International (PSI), and other health stakeholders in the fight against hypertension.

‎

‎He maintained that collective efforts from government, families, and communities are essential to building a healthier Anambra State and reducing the threat posed by non-communicable diseases.
