Labour Party Senatorial Candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial District, Ven. Tochukwu Ikezue, has called on Federal Government to provide full explanation over reports alleging that about ₦8.83 trillion in federal expenditure for 2025 was not reflected in the approved national budget.

Ikezue in a statement issued on Monday said the reports, which reportedly emerged from a recent consultation by the International Monetary Fund, if confirmed, raise serious concerns about fiscal discipline, transparency and accountability in the management of Nigeria’s public finances.

According to him, expenditure outside the approved budgetary framework, if left unexplained, could erode public confidence in government institutions and undermine the principles of democratic governance.

He stressed that every public fund must be properly accounted for and channelled towards improving citizens’ welfare, especially now many Nigerians are facing economic hardship, unemployment, inadequate healthcare, poor educational facilities and deteriorating infrastructure,

While insisting federal government must provide Nigerians comprehensive explanation on the reported expenditure, the LP candidate called on the National Assembly to exercise its constitutional oversight responsibility by conducting thorough and transparent investigation into the matter.

He also called on the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation and other relevant accountability institutions to ensure due process was followed and the facts were established.

Ikezue maintained that the issue should not be politicised or dismissed, insisting that public officials must remain accountable to the people and that the management of public resources should always be subject to effective oversight.

He called on relevant institutions to act promptly in the national interest, insisting that Nigerians deserve full disclosure on the matter.

“Nigerians must continue to demand transparency, accountability and prudent management of public resources through lawful and democratic means.

“The sustainable national development cannot be achieved where questions surrounding public finance are ignored,” he added.
