He emphasised that Rotary is more than an organisation dedicated to humanitarian service.

“Rotary is a family united by friendship, shared values, and a commitment to making lasting differences in society.

“Rotary Club of Onitsha Metropolis remains committed to building lasting friendships, strengthening communities, and creating lasting impact through selfless service,” he added.

Ezuma encouraged members to continue building genuine relationships, describing strong friendships as foundation of effective service and sustainable impact.

Club Trainer, Rtn. Ugoo Abba, while opening the discussion, reminded members that although people join Rotary for different reasons, many remain because of the meaningful friendships they build over time.

Through a series of thought-provoking quotations and member contributions, the discussion reinforced that friendship is the heartbeat of Rotary and the driving force behind effective service.

Participants agreed that genuine friendships build stronger clubs, strengthen communities, promote trust, encourage teamwork, and inspire lifelong service.

Members also acknowledged that every Rotary fellowship presents an opportunity to welcome new friends, deepen existing relationships, and work together to create lasting impact.

The discussion further examined behaviours that weaken Rotary friendship.

Members identified pride, gossip, disrespect, jealousy, selfishness, unforgiveness, constant criticism, lack of honesty, and absence of empathy as attitudes capable of undermining unity within a Rotary club.

They unanimously agreed that humility, kindness, mutual respect, appreciation, trust, teamwork, honesty, and empathy remain essential values for sustaining a healthy and vibrant Rotary fellowship.

At the end of the session, members reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening friendship, supporting one another, promoting unity, and living out the Rotary motto, Service Above Self, in every aspect of club life.

The inaugural fellowship concluded with renewed enthusiasm for the 2026 to 2027 Rotary year and a shared determination to build a stronger Rotary Club of Onitsha Metropolis through friendship, service, teamwork, and meaningful community impact.

The successful fellowship has set a positive tone for the new Rotary year and demonstrated the club’s commitment to creating an environment where friendship flourishes, members grow together, and service continues to transform lives.

The fellowship featured Rotary protocols, an engaging fellowship icebreaker, recognition of visiting Rotarians and guests, refreshments, networking, and an interactive discussion on the theme “Friendship in Rotary Service.”

Rather than delivering a conventional lecture, the session encouraged open participation, allowing members to share personal experiences and reflections on the importance of friendship within Rotary.

The fellowship which marked beginning of a new Rotary year under the leadership of President, Rtn. Dr. Ezuma Smart Chinedu attracted members and guests for an evening of fellowship, networking, and renewed commitment to Rotary ideals.
