A Nigerian businessman based in South Africa’s Northwest Province, Chief Isaac Morba has advised Nigerian youths to abandon dangerous irregular migration routes, describing the journey through Libya and the Sahara Desert as “a voluntary trip to death.”

Speaking during a podcast organised by the Umuezeanya Youth Association, Morba recounted his failed attempt to reach Europe through Libya in 1999, revealing that he survived only by luck and divine intervention.

“Hundreds, if not thousands, of Nigerian youths have died in the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea. I survived by God’s grace, but if you ask me today, I will tell you—it is not worth it.”

Morba said his European dream collapsed after arriving in Libya during the Muammar Gaddafi era, forcing him to return to Nigeria before trying unsuccessfully to build a life in Pakistan.

After three difficult years in Pakistan, he relocated to South Africa, where he has spent over 15 years running a legitimate automobile tyre and vehicle accessories business.

He warned that Libya has become even more dangerous since the fall of Gaddafi.

“Today, Libya has become a nightmare for Africans trying to reach Europe. No matter what anyone tells you, don’t go to Libya.”

Morba also disclosed that many migrants are betrayed by trusted contacts who promise to help them abroad but eventually abandon or exploit them.

He urged young Nigerians to pursue only legitimate migration opportunities through education, employment or business.

Morba was honoured with a Certificate of Commendation for mentoring young people by Umuezeanya Youth Association at the end of the three-hour session.
