The Anambra State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development has embarked on tree planting across the State. This campaign, coordinated by the Open Spaces and Recreation Department of the Ministry, was tagged “More Green Campaign” and targets about 1, 000 economic and flower plants across important landmarks in Anambra State.
Specifically, the Ministry has palm trees, oranges, soursop, mangoes, masquerade trees, king palm, among other varieties of plants in its collection. This effort is part of the Government’s response to global weather concerns, leading to extreme weather conditions including flooding. It is also part of the Government’s efforts to strengthen the State’s aesthetics, to reflect Governor Soludo’s vision of a livable homeland. Furthermore, it is part of the response to the problem of erosion, all of which informed Governor Soludo’s decision to declare a state of emergency on the environment in Anambra State.
So far, the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development targets the following landmarks for the tree planting exercise: Jerome Udoji State Secretariat, Federal Secretariat Awka, Solution Fun City, Amawbia flyover, Kwata flyover, Aroma flyover, Emeka Anyaoku Boulevard and Ikenga Shopping Mall, Awka.
Similarly, the Anambra State Ministry of Environment is working on a plan for a state-wide tree planting exercise, which the Commissioner for Environment, Dr Clem Aguiyi, had hinted is a project Ndi Anambra should take ownership of as part of the State’s climate action, providing a long-term and sustainable solution to the State’s environmental challenges.
