Fire outbreaks remain a major safety concern in Nigeria, posing serious threats to lives and property and highlighting the need for effective prevention, early detection and rapid emergency response.
From residential buildings and markets to offices and other public spaces, fire incidents can spread quickly, resulting in significant losses and leaving individuals, businesses and communities with devastating consequences.
In a bid to address the challenge, students of St. Charles College, Onitsha, under the school’s JET Club, on Aug. 22, developed a Smart Fire Alarm System capable of detecting fire at an early stage.
The project, presented by Odigwechukwu Zimuzo David and Okoye Somtochukwu, demonstrated how students can apply technology, creativity, critical thinking and innovation to develop practical solutions to societal challenges.
According to the students, the system is designed to detect fire and send immediate alerts to a user’s mobile phone, a designated contact or the state fire service, thereby helping to facilitate prompt emergency intervention.
The demonstration showcased the students’ practical understanding of technology and their determination to develop solutions that could help protect lives and property during fire emergencies.
The initiative also underscored the value of practical education in empowering young people to translate classroom knowledge into innovative solutions capable of addressing real-life challenges in their communities.
