Nsugbe community in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday elected Chief Nzekwesili John Nweke, Esq, from Ivite village, where the Igweship was zoned, as the new Igwe of Nsugbe. This election outcome has been received by Ndi Nsugbe with both hands, as many moved around the town in jubilation.
Reacting to reports on the interference of the Anambra State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, his media aide, Ruby Ogbonna, dismissed the claims, calling it a “false alarm.” She further noted that the community is calm after the election. The statement also remarked that the Attorney General had stayed away from the Igwe contest because it involved his community. “The Attorney General has not acted in his official capacity in respect of the election or any court action involving the State Government. As a matter of fact, the Attorney General has stayed away from the election process…,” Ruby said in the statement, stressing that “Nsugbe is calm, peaceful and (that) there is no crisis whatsoever in the community”.
In his reaction, responding to the allegation of intervention by the Government of Anambra State in the Igweship election process of Nsugbe on Sunday, the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Vincent Ezeaka, Esq, dismissed the allegations in entirety. According to the Commissioner, the State Government never conducts the Igwe election; the community does. “The community conducted the election. Government was a mere observer. The community conducts the election; we observe,” the Commissioner said, noting that the report of the outcome of the process will be duly presented to him.
Meanwhile, several videos of jubilation in Nsugbe over the outcome of the Igwe election, where Chief Nzekwesili John Nweke, Esq, emerged as Igwe-elect of Nsugbe, have gone viral on various social media channels.
