The Anambra State Government has renewed its appeal to residents to embrace telemedicine services as part of efforts to expand access to healthcare delivery across the state.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, made the call during an interactive session with 42 doctors working under the programme. He explained that the initiative, introduced by the Ministry of Health, was designed to close healthcare gaps, particularly in rural and underserved communities where hospitals and clinics are limited.

According to him, telemedicine provides patients the opportunity to consult doctors virtually, receive medical advice, and obtain prescriptions without traveling long distances. He described the approach as both cost-effective and lifesaving, especially during emergencies or in areas with weak health infrastructure.

Dr. Obidike reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the scheme and warned against acts capable of sabotaging its success. He stated that any individual or official frustrating the smooth operation of the system would face sanctions, including possible removal from the State Health Agency.

To boost efficiency, the commissioner disclosed that doctors engaged in the programme would undergo regular retraining to improve their knowledge of telemedicine technology and stay aligned with its objectives. He added that the government would continue to invest in digital infrastructure, stable internet connectivity, and technical support to ensure the platform functions effectively.

Commending the dedication of the young professionals driving the project, Dr. Obidike said their passion was critical to delivering modern healthcare services through digital platforms.

Contributing to the discussion, Dr. Chinonso Nwosu from Njikoka Local Government Area pointed out administrative lapses by some Officers in Charge and poor device-handling skills among certain personnel as key challenges. He stressed the need for improved coordination and practical training to address these setbacks.

Similarly, Dr. Chieze Collins from Anambra East urged the government to intensify public awareness campaigns to ensure more residents know about the service. He recommended the use of television, radio, and newspapers to promote the programme and encourage participation.

Meanwhile, the state government has released official lines through which residents can reach doctors via the Telehub Centre. The numbers are: +234 704 866 3726, +234 704 019 9716, and +234 913 578 2822.
