The Akwaihedi Community in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State has formally disassociated itself from the trending video depicting the killing of a man by personnel of the Nigerian Army.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the President-General of Akwaihedi Community, Hon. (Barr.) Oliver Mbagwu, the community’s leadership and entire populace distanced themselves from what he described as a misleading and malicious narrative circulating on social media regarding the security-related incident.
According to Mbagwu, the community is deeply concerned about attempts by certain individuals to distort facts and create a negative impression of Akwaihedi a peaceful and law-abiding community known for its long-standing cooperation with security agencies.
He clarified that the individual seen in the viral video is not a resident, representative, or member of Akwaihedi Community.
Instead, the man is identified as one of the criminal elements earlier apprehended by soldiers operating around the Orsumuoghu axis.
After his arrest, he deceitfully misled the soldiers into Akwaihedi under the false pretext of taking them to the hideout of his criminal associates.
The President-General explained that the suspect had been arrested during a targeted security operation aimed at dismantling criminal hideouts.
While in lawful custody, he attempted to escape, prompting security personnel to take decisive action to restrain him. This, he noted, resulted in the events captured in the circulating video.
Mbagwu said that efforts to twist the incident or associate the suspect’s criminal actions with the people of Akwaihedi are malicious, unfounded, and completely unacceptable.
He stressed that Akwaihedi Community has always supported legitimate security operations designed to safeguard lives and property, and has consistently cooperated with the military, police, and other law-enforcement agencies to maintain peace and order.
The community therefore called on the general public, media professionals, and social media users to disregard the false and damaging narrative being promoted by mischief-makers.
Mbagwu reiterated that Akwaihedi remains committed to truth, transparency, community safety, and peaceful coexistence, adding that the town is neither occupied by insurgents nor experiencing any security breach, as relative peace currently prevails.
He further warned those circulating defamatory narratives to desist immediately, noting that the leadership of Akwaihedi will not hesitate to take appropriate legal and civic actions to defend and protect the good name of the community.
