The recent emergence of the Mayor of Anaocha Local Government Area, Comrade Romanus Ibekwe, as Anambra State’s Best Performing Mayor in Primary Healthcare Delivery has further highlighted what many stakeholders describe as a remarkable record of grassroots development and transformational leadership across Anaocha.
Comrade Ibekwe received the prestigious award and a cash prize of ₦3 million during the Anambra Primary Healthcare Leadership Challenge held at the Lighthouse, Awka, after Anaocha emerged as the number one local government area in primary healthcare performance among the 21 local government councils in the state.
While the award specifically recognizes excellence in healthcare delivery, many observers believe it is also a reflection of the mayor’s impactful interventions across virtually every sector of development in Anaocha since assuming office.
Under his administration, over 23 primary healthcare centres were equipped with modern medical facilities and equipment, significantly improving access to quality healthcare services for residents. These efforts contributed immensely to Anaocha’s top ranking in the state’s healthcare performance assessment.
Beyond healthcare, the Ibekwe administration made significant investments in education through the distribution of school equipment and learning materials to students across communities in the local government area. The initiative was aimed at supporting teaching and learning while encouraging educational advancement among young people.
The administration also attracted and facilitated several developmental projects, including road construction and rehabilitation projects, erosion control interventions, and the establishment of a palm oil processing factory designed to stimulate economic growth and create employment opportunities for residents.
In the area of environmental sanitation, Comrade Ibekwe tackled long-standing waste management challenges by evacuating refuse dumps that had remained unattended for more than a decade, restoring cleaner and healthier surroundings across parts of the local government.
His commitment to youth empowerment and technological advancement led to the establishment of an E-Automobile Mechanic Workshop at the Anaocha Local Government Secretariat, providing opportunities for skills acquisition and preparing young people for emerging opportunities in the automotive industry.
The administration also undertook the renovation and furnishing of the Anaocha Local Government Secretariat, transforming the facility into a more conducive environment for efficient service delivery and improved staff productivity.
Access to potable water equally received significant attention, with over 23 solar-powered boreholes constructed across various communities, providing thousands of residents with reliable and sustainable sources of clean water.
These achievements and numerous other community-based projects earned Comrade Ibekwe widespread commendation from stakeholders, traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, and residents across Anaocha. Many had expected him to secure a second term in office to consolidate on the developmental gains already recorded under his leadership.
However, despite his impressive performance and growing popularity among residents, political developments resulted in his replacement, a decision that surprised many supporters who believed his track record warranted another opportunity to continue serving the people.
Nevertheless, Comrade Ibekwe has remained focused on governance and service delivery. He has consistently assured the people of Anaocha that he remains committed to fulfilling every aspect of his mandate before leaving office.
Speaking after receiving the award, the mayor dedicated the honour to the people of Anaocha and expressed gratitude to Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, for creating an enabling environment for grassroots development.
He reiterated that the recognition belongs to the entire Anaocha community, healthcare workers, councillors, traditional rulers, stakeholders, and members of his administration whose collective efforts contributed to the successes recorded during his tenure.
As his administration approaches its final phase, the Best Mayor Award stands as yet another testament to a legacy built on service, development, and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of the people of Anaocha Local Government Area.
This version presents the award as evidence of Ibekwe’s overall performance across healthcare, education, infrastructure, sanitation, youth empowerment, water supply, and economic development while highlighting public expectations for his return for a second term.
