It was a gory scene Wednesday afternoon at the popular Eke Awka Market, Anambra State, when rival cult groups, the Aye Confraternity and Baga clashed in a show of supremacy.
This tragic event resulted in the gruesome murder of Igwe Omeli, a prominent figure in the Aye cult group. The clash, reportedly rooted in market politics and control, left the market in chaos and the traders and shoppers terrified.
Reports revealed that Igwe Omeli, who was used by the Aye leadership to maintain control over market members, sought refuge inside the market during the confrontation. He attempted to rally his followers for support, but unfortunately, before they could act, he was captured and brutally attacked, leading to his untimely death and the mutilation of his body.
The assailants not only took the victim’s life but also fled the scene with his head, further intensifying the shock and fear among witnesses.
Confirming the incident, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, the Police Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, acknowledged the horrifying act and assured that the police were on the scene and actively pursuing the suspects involved.
Despite the fear and panic caused by the clash, some traders have started to return to their shops as normalcy gradually returns to the area.
