Two men, Philip Avatus and Pius Dickson were on Monday sentenced to seven years imprisonment each by Amawbia chief magistrate’s court for stealing iron rods worth N1.1 million.
Avatus and Dickson from Taraba State, had pleaded guilty to three count-charge of conspiracy, stealing and malicious damage, at their arraignment.
The prosecutor, Insp. Innocent Agu, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on July 24, along Amawbia- Nise Road, Awka.
He said the defendant allegedly damaged, cut and stole 120 pieces of 12Mm iron rods used for the construction of drainage along Amawbia-Nise Road in Awka.
According to Agu, the offences contravened Sections 495(a), 380(b) and 415 of the Criminal Code Cap 36 Vol. II Revise Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria 1991, as amended.
In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Mike Anyadiegwu said he sentenced each of the convicts seven years imprisonment since they admitted to the offences and showed remorse.
He said that the sentence would run concurrently.
