A suspected attack by internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as Yahoo boys, has resulted in the death of an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officer and left another critically injured in Awka, Anambra State.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred on Friday morning when EFCC operatives from the Enugu zonal headquarters attempted to apprehend a group of cybercrime suspects.
The deceased officer, an assistant superintendent who had recently completed a promotional examination, lost his life during the operation. His colleague sustained critical injuries in the ambush.
But according to a reliable source, “they broke into a compound at commissioner’s quarters by 3 am, without their uniform, the owner of the house who is a family man and a top Anglican is a licensed gun owner, thinking they were thieves opened fire”
Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that an investigation was underway.
“Investigation into the sad incident is ongoing. The suspect is in custody, and the firearm has been recovered. Further details shall be communicated, please,” Ikenga said.
