The Anambra State Police Command has begun specialised combat and crime-fighting training for 100 of its officers as part of efforts to address rising insecurity in the state.

The officers arrived at the Police College, Oji River, Enugu State, on Wednesday for the training programme.

Speaking through the Police Public Relations Officer of the Police College, ASP Omokpagha Philip, the Commandant, AIG Bretet Emmanuel Simon, said the training was essential for preventing and reducing crime.

According to him, the initiative forms part of the Nigeria Police Force’s efforts to strengthen internal security and improve policing nationwide through continuous capacity building, in line with the vision of the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

Addressing the officers on arrival, Simon said the programme was designed to enhance their operational capacity, tactical competence and professional readiness to tackle current security challenges, including armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes in and around Anambra State.

“I urge the officers to demonstrate discipline, commitment and professionalism throughout the duration of the exercise,” he said.

He explained that the training would focus on physical fitness, weapons handling, tactical movement, resilience, intelligence-led operations and strict adherence to the rules of engagement, including respect for human rights.

Simon added that upon completion, the officers would return to their command better equipped in combat operations and weapons handling to address security challenges.

He said the trained personnel would also be valuable to the command and other parts of the country when required.
