A 32-year-old mother, Ogechi Ofoma, has been arrested in Anambra State for allegedly torturing her seven-year-old daughter, Oluebube Ofoma, with a hot knife and inflicting severe bodily injuries on the child.
The incident occurred in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state, with the girl rescued following the intervention of security personnel from Ibollo Community, Awada-Obosi, and concerned residents.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the arrest yesterday, saying it received a report of alleged child abuse and severe bodily injuries involving the seven-year-old girl.
The command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement, saying the prompt intervention of the community security personnel and residents led to the child’s rescue and the arrest of her mother.
“The prompt intervention of security personnel from the Ibollo Community, Awada-Obosi, and concerned residents led to the child’s rescue and the arrest of her mother, Mrs. Ogechi Ofoma, 32,” the statement read in part.
According to the police, preliminary information indicated that the child was subjected to severe physical abuse, including injuries allegedly inflicted with a hot knife.
The command condemned the alleged brutal treatment of the girl, assuring that all those found responsible would be brought to justice.
The Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Oji Ama, has also commenced collaboration with the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare to ensure that the victim receives urgent medical attention, protection and other necessary welfare support.
The command commended the Ibollo Community security personnel and residents for their vigilance and swift intervention, which it said prevented the child from suffering further harm.
“The Anambra State Police Command assures the public that the investigation will be thorough, professional, and uncompromising.
“The welfare, safety, and best interests of the child remain paramount, and the Command will continue to work with relevant agencies to protect vulnerable persons and ensure accountability in accordance with the law,” Ikenga said.
