2023: There’s more to National Assembly than claiming Mrs. Project – Umeh

Candidate of the Labour Party for Anambra-Central Senatorial Zone election in 2023, Chief Victor Umeh has explained that there is more to National Assembly than merely claiming to be Mr or Mrs. Project.

Umeh, who made the explanation at his Udoka Estate Awka Campaign Office, said the task of a legislator is not what is being showcased to the people through billboards and social media platforms, adding that a senator should be able to represent his or her people with boldness and courage as well as the tenacity of argumentative acumen.

Umeh, who was the former Senator representing Anambra-Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, noted that the parliament is where debates are being held and representatives have the courage to speak vehemently on all issues affecting their constituents and the country generally and that if a Senator cannot address the plights of his people at the National Assembly, then of what use is such representation.

He noted that National Assembly representation was not building two bedrooms for widows or starting a road that will not be completed as he believes that execution of road projects can only be done by the federal and state governments.

He said sometimes legislators would lobby projects into the budget and they would not be completed because there would be no money to execute such projects. Umeh maintained that the functions of the National Assembly are clearly stipulated in the constitution; that the constituency projects that was introduced in recent times was just to help the National Assembly members to say they did one or two things even as he pointed out that it was not their major tasks.

Ohamadike as he is fondly called, said the major task of a legislator was to assist in making laws, stressing that when he was the Senator representing Anambra-Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, he opposed the oil subsidy bill and advocated for the building of refineries across the country amongst numerous other meaningful contributions.

He said if elected into the Senate in  2023, he would help Nigerian people get the attention of the president to their needs because he believes Peter Obi is coming to address the needs of the Nigerian people. Umeh was equally of the opinion that people say Peter Obi does not have structures yet his opponents are sweating profusely with fear.

Umeh said he was an apostle of equity and fairness for all people of Nigeria not only the Igbo people and that what will make Nigeria a great country is inclusiveness. He said Nigeria is sharply divided at the moment across various lines and according to him, a country that is divided cannot pursue development which he said is the major task facing those who will go to National Assembly to make laws that will unite the country and also be in a position to carry out oversight function on the executive, that the agenda of the National Assembly should be pursuit of good governance through quality legislations.
