Phyno Set to Launch Special Brand of Condom — “Okpu”

Nigerian music star Phyno has stirred another social media buzz and chain of reactions across the entertainment and public health sectors of following the announcement of his planned launch of a new brand of condom brand, “Okpu by Alobam,” for sexual pleasure and protection.

The award-winning rapper, known for his cultural depth and consistency in indigenous hip-hop, recently teased the product on social media, sharing images of its sleek, camouflage-themed packaging with the caption, “Stay strapped!!!”

The condom brand name itself also carries strong cultural symbolism. “Okpu,” an Igbo word meaning “hat” or “cap,” is also cleverly used as a metaphor for protection, while “Alobam,” a term popularized by Phyno early in his career, translates to “my brother” or “close ally.” A combination of two terms loosely translates “Protection by Close Ally”, showcasing both a sense of identity and connection with his fan base.

Images released so far reveal at least two distinct product variants, featuring pink and olive-green camouflage designs, boldly branded with the “OKPU” logo, a creative fusion of street culture, style, and functionality that has already sparked curiosity on different social media platforms.

Although the official launch date, pricing, and distribution channels are yet to be disclosed, the announcement has continued to generate significant social media buzz, with many fans and netizens praising the rapper’s innovation, career diversification, and business foresight.

Reports have it that regular use of condom among sexually active young people in Nigeria is still alarmingly low, with some research putting it at below 40 percent, largely due to stigma, accessibility issues, and misconceptions about pleasure and trust.

Speculations, however, abound that it is against this backdrop that Phyno’s entry into the condom market is pulling massive attention, given that his influence, particularlyno among youths, could help change the current narrative around safe sex, beginning with his fan base and the populace by extension.
